Title: here's a crazy notion

and this might have already been discussed but.... if JB had confessed to the crimes and pleaded guilty at his trial is there a possibilty that he could have actually been released from prison by now ?

It depends on whether he was still regarded as a risk by prison authorities. I wouldn't want him walking around Essex or the Winnipeg shopping mall..
