I don't recall hearing about the above until I watched the following:

I would suggest the murderer, Colin Howell, is a psychopath. (And Steve if you're reading this he was a regular church goer!) To carry out the murders the way in which he did, get away with it, and then live with the lie until he confessed years later is almost unbelievable. He was considered a pillar of the community: dentist, family man and regular church goer.

An evil man. Maybe as a churchgoer he decided ultimately to confess his sins.
