Title: Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, resigns over church abuse scandal
Post by: Cambridgecutie on November 12, 2024, 07:41:PM
In 2024 how can anyone take a man seriously dressed in such attire:

Sshhh, you don't want mitre- and vestment-makers to go out of business, do you?

And a lead for the missus to keep you in check?

I was wondering if she would like the Christening spoons for cutlery.

His vestments don't bear any correlation to the subject of your thread. Do you want him attired in the Chelsea football kit? However, I agree the finery is unnecessary: https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Luke%2012%3A27

The RC/AC in me adores the theatrics -a priest friend has magnificent robes befitting every 'occasion'. However, my nonconformist side thinks such is unnecessary expenditure in a world full of needy people.

Especially so in Africa where the most needy reside -

It grieves me when I receive the usual round robin Christmas appeals for aid to such countries when the Church hierarchy there -not forgetting numerous others in similar positions- are presenting themselves in such attire. The Church has to be one of the wealthiest institutions in the world, but putting funds into spreading "the word"/giving hope to half the Christian world is pretty useless when the other half is dying of hunger and neglect...................apologies for the lunchtime rant!!

If they were genuine, they would wear a hair shirt like Thomas More.

There's abuse in all denominations, sadly, combined with a cover-up culture. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/archbishop-of-york-must-resign-says-second-abuse-inquiry-leader/ar-AA1ujogo?ocid=msedgntp&pc=U531&cvid=8e7e11e29176452bbeb6806bf522c17a&ei=11

Probably because they have a warped view of sexuality.

Does this sort of abuse feature within humanism?

Unfortunately yes. It encompasses all trades, professions, classes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-53694012

I don't know why you put humanism on a pedestal. There are people from all walks of life who are abusers, whichever form that takes.

I put humanism on a pedestal because it isn't based on dogma unlike organised religion.

Yes there are people from all walks of life who are abusers but it is especially galling when it is committed by the religious who have a holier than thou approach.

The victims are still victims. I know anecdotally about abuse in the Christian-denominated churches but not individual cases. But humanists are not exempt from being abusers.

True but they don't hold themselves up as paradigms of virtue.

Is it time for the CoE to shut up its shop?

It might be difficult if the future William V declares he won't take on the role. As far as abuse is concerned there should be no adult left alone with children in church or outside. I thought most abuse went on in families anyhow.

P.S. They should have adopted the independent model. It seems too many clerics are feathering their own nests. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c98y011dy0yo

Who would like to mete out some discipline to former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey and other men of the cloth? :P

You'd look very fetching dressed in mitre and vestments. Then secretly beat 'em into submission with your hefty crook!
