Title: Chess
Post by: Roch on January 26, 2023, 08:52:PM
David, you are a complete idiot.

When you two play chess is it like Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov Vs Bobby Fischer?

I haven't checked their records but I awarded you the Russian status and David the American.

Bobby Fischer was certainly a right wing anti-semitic nutcase (even though half jewish) so I think I am happy to be Karpov and probably David would have Fischer as his hero because he really hated the USSR.

The first bet I ever had was the massive sum of £1 which I placed at Ladbrokes on Spassky against Fischer just before the Reykjavik world championship match. Sadly I lost, but I did fare better later on dogs and horses.

A popular joke in Russia is that negotiating with the US is like playing chess with a pigeon.
First it knocks over all the pieces, then shits on the board before finally strutting around as if it won. David's contributions to this thread fit the analogy perfectly.

      So more accurately;
Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov vs. A Feral Pigeon.
I'm sure you can figure out who is who ;)

I play both, but 960 has really grown on me. I didn't really like it at first but now I prefer it.

I am not a fan of 960, which you probably know was originally suggested by Bobby Fischer as a variant.  I only play it when David challenges me and I probably do not pay enough attention which is why, very occasionally, David beats me >:(.  I much prefer the standard version.  Maybe David will post up our match stats for standard chess, possibly separating the games where I have given him rook and pawn odds!  :))

Really? Your 960 stats shows you play many players other than myself! Your best win is a rematch against Serbian GrandURAL(1371).

Its not entirely accurate that Bobby Fischer created it. It was called shuffle chess long before Fisher announced this 1996. All Fisher did was suggest the randomization have constraints whereby the king is always be placed between the rooks, bishops on both colours.

I have only played 960 when challenged or requested to join a match.  I do not mind it - it avoids all opening theory and in some ways that is a good thing.  However, I enjoy openings and generally far prefer the standard game.

Anyway, are you going to publish the stats? :))

I have played with Justice a few times - he is a good player.  I have not played him in the last few months but I imagine we will play again before long.

Nor did I and yes I should.  There is no checkmate apparently, just king capture and otherwise illegal moves seem to be allowed.

Its only just been introduced on Chess.com but was invented a few years ago.

Never played 960. Can't say I'm tempted. I don't have a grand-master, or even close, understanding of opening theory but I am with ngb on this one.
David, has your ratio of winning against ngb improved over time/got worse/remained the same?

I think David should give the stats for regular games where I did not give him the benefit of a material handicap!

Regular Chess (no handicap):  21 losses 0 wins.

960 Chess: 61 losses 1 draw  17 wins.

I learned to play very early on in senior school but at some point discontinued. While I enjoyed playing, I never developed to the point where I understood strategy. I did spend a while playing on PS4 against the computer, about a year or two ago. It was enjoyable to some extent and quite challenging for me.

You probably know a lot more about strategy than you realise, unless you are playing against good players strategy and opening knowledge is almost of no use as you will be out of opening theory in a couple of moves etc. and the game is decided just by tactics.

The same goes for endgame knowledge.
