Title: Another reason Bamber phoned Chelmsford Police.
Post by: Adam on January 18, 2022, 06:41:PM
It justify's the 16 minute gap between receiving Nevill's call & ringing the police. If the police could check call times.

'I was looking for the number of Chelmsford Police'.

The 16 minute gap perhaps due to him phoning his AM at WHF. Then cycling back.

It is quite ridicuolous in an emergency situation to waste time in this manner.

At the moment there are 3 reasons he would phone a police station over 20 miles away. Which all go hand in hand -

He thought it would give him more chance of getting picked up by them from his cottage.

It gives him more time to change/clean after arriving back at his cottage & prior to meeting the police.

If the police could check call times, it justifies a gap of 15-20 minutes after Nevill's call - 'I was looking for the number of Chelmsford Police'.

He also had time to wake up Julie. It's quite evident to me that all individuals within White House Farm were dead at this point.

When he rang Julie, 'everything was going well'!

If it was a skeleton staff at that hour it would have been as broad as it was long to have dialled 999 or the area code.

I agree. JB would also have to be very naive to think that if he called police 500 miles away, they wouldn't try and contact their nearest available colleagues.

The only significance of him not dialling 999 is that it demonstrates a lack of urgency.

Maybe in JB's head he didn't want it to have been an emergency ? Who knows what he was thinking ? It doesn't make him a murderer.

Lookout, that's a very big "IF". I don't believe there ever to be just a "skeleton staff" manning Emergency Services. It may not be the case now, but back then, according to where one was calling from, very often, the emergency service requested, would be there whilst the caller was still on the phone.

Don't think he ever considered call a police station 500 miles away. Chelmsford was his choice.

In 1985 when there was little crime compared to now, there would have been far fewer on duty.

Anyway the very mention of " gun " would have prompted an emergency ? Would it not ?

I'm afraid I have to disagree there, Lookout. Back then, there were enough police to do a walking beat. There were enough police drivers to have them driving different types of car for different purposes. There were, unlike today, police aplenty. Nor, unlike today, did patients have to wait for hours when they called for police or an ambulance.

If there were " police aplenty " then, along with a lower crime rate, there'd have been a few spare cars around to answer the immediate calls on their given " patches " ?
