I guess if Peter Simpson needed to phone DCI Harris it does make some sense that he may have chosen to use the office phone which was a bit more private.

Or it was a request that Harris should contact Simpson by land line later, when back at the station?  :-\

There seems to be quite a lot of guess work from a single line written in a log.

It is if that document is the only source for that page in Lomax's book.  I don't know where he got that information from and I cannot see what difference it makes to the case.  Some innocents may suspect Nevill may have used that phone to phone EP earlier but there is no way of proving that. Personally I don't believe Nevill ever phoned EP that night,  so I do see the argument that Simpson phoned Harris ,more plausible but I doubt we will ever know the answer to that now.

I've sorted it thanks Caroline, my mouse pad is a bit weird and couldn't bring up the menu but have discovered how to do it ..... finally. :)

I agree up to a point but he simply stated that the phone may have been used to contact the police station by either of two people which would explain why the last dialed number was in fact the police station.  He does go on to question whether Nevill may have used that phone to call the police which is a different point.  I have never believes Nevill phoned the station anyway.
It doesn't change the fact that there was a phone in the office with a last dial number memory which was the reason I posted the quotes as Adam insisted there was no such phone. :-\

Where is it stated 'officially' that the last number dialed was the police station?

Goodness knows but if he needed to phone the station he wouldn't have used the kitchen phone, surely and it was probably quieter in the office.

Caroline has beaten me to the question already, but you seem to be saying that the last call was to the police and therefore you think a call to Simpson is more likely than Neville making a call.

How do you know the last call was to the police?

isn't there a statement from the officair saying he used the phone though.

No.

Gibbon's used a phone in a nearby house to contact his seniors and press, etc.If Harris phoned Simpson I would think that he did the same.

I think it's inconceivable that the police would use the phones at WHF prior to crime scene investigations. If it was true then I would be concerned.
