David Shaw touched upon the use of the metal detector on the second day of the police investigation in the kitchen at the farmhouse in his manuscript without saying exactly what it was cops found! You get the impression they were searching for bullet cases, but the insight alluded to by DS Davidson as to the events at the scene on 8 August leaves little doubt that it involved searching for and finding the thread protector (end of guns barrel) which had paint on it...

Maybe somebody should examine all the available crime scene photographs taken in the kitchen on 7 August 1985 with a view to finding the thread protector in question...
