I'm unsure, he may have had to shoot her there for whatever reason. Or he may have planned to shoot her there for reasons never fully understood, I think the only person he needed to make sure wasn't shot and killed in a bedroom was Ralph.

He could just plug the phone into the bedroom socket and take it off the hook. Then claim Neville must have phoned him there.
