I agree with this guy.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-506706/Why-I-believe-paedophiles-NEVER-cured-says-chemical-castration-expert.html

We discussed chemical castration during my training. It seems that whilst it curtailed the physical ability, it did little to suppress desire. It was felt that this could be responsible for unrestrained physical violence towards potential victims.

Go down THAT road and someone is sure to start talking about human rights being denied.

Psychiatry is one of the most backward of all sciences. Only around 75 years ago my aunt was prone to hysteria. The doctors solution was to take her womb out. Similar barbaric experiments are still used today. For instance electricution treatment was used on mental patients for many years and at least one psychiatrist confessed that they still didn't understand how it worked. Just because some people are misfits in our society we feel we have to mutilate them in some way. It appears to me that we are still not very far advanced than the witch doctors of Africa?

I don't know of ANY doctor who would be willing to say they know all there is to know about the workings of the brain. It's unsurprising to me that your aunt was given a HYSTERectomy for HYSTERia. The link is perfectly obvious. No one EVER seemed to know WHY ECT worked on some but not others, but that's life. In the main, psych units and their staff do the best they can given their severe underfunding. The problems arise when it comes to "care in the community". Generally speaking, I believe the public is as scared of the mentally ill NOW as they were in the days when suffers were called "Mad" and "Insane."

My emphasis was the idea of taking bits off people just so they conform to our way of life. To my mind a very unscientific method of controlling people and no better that witchcraft. The fact is not that they don't understand why electric shock treatment works on some and not other. But the fact they don't understand it at all. Barbaric if you ask me.

We don´t know if it works at all. Some get better, some get worse, with some no change. Might as well have happened without the electro shock, we don´t know. And I agree, it seems awfully barbaric!

Can´t believe the cut the uterus out of your aunt, jeeeezzz!

This is what used to be done.As Mr G explained, the word Hysteria is connected to Hysterectomy, and the removal of the reproductive organs was carried out to alleviate the suffering of a patient whose mental state was " delicate ". This was before hormonal treatment was used. Usually in menopausal women who had severe mental problems,as some do even today.

But you can't apply barbarism JUST to mental health and turn a blind eye to what went on in other areas of medicine. MANY found themselves in mental institutions because their families didn't know what else to do with them. Women who had babies out of wedlock were said to be suffering from Nymphomania. These poor girls may have been treated -entirely, IMO, unnecessarily- with ECT, but balance that against, for example, the amount of, perhaps healthy limbs which were amputated in the most appalling conditions, leaving the patient to either die from infection OR being subject to life as a pauper because they were unable to work.

Medicine, mental AND physical, HAS come a long way since those days, but it often falls down in its application, ie when departments don't share information it's the patient who suffers, when the correct hygiene procedures aren't adhered to it's the patient who suffers, when there is poor communication between patient and staff it's the patient who suffers.
