He'd certainly have been a sitting target on the night of the murders after having worked all day and seemingly half the night as well, him going back out into the fields again after supper,he'll have definitely felt his 61 years poor man. Which is why he'd have given up the fight as easily as he had done.

Yes, he'd have been tired but I really don't believe that a few days of physically hard work would have created the picture you paint of Neville. 61 is NO age. I have friends who are financiers who are FAR more care worn than farmers of a similar age. What very well MIGHT have finished him off, though, is the sight of his son (OK, daughter, too) about to shoot him.

And with that,Neville at the table after having eaten supper and there was Jeremy loading the rifle in readiness to shoot what he heard were rabbits outside ? What an opportunity to have shot his father right there and then. Obviously if Neville had suspected Jeremy for one minute, right there and then,he'd have disarmed him ?
I'm beginning to wonder if it was rabbits that Jeremy had heard scurrying/rustling. Or someone else listening in.

And what were both dogs doing with themselves if a stranger was skulking around outside, and why would a non stranger be listening in.? There'd be little to hear between wall density and room size.

This is just it,because it was a farm with workers in and out day and evening,it would be something that the dogs would have been used to. As for the back, wasn't there a back door with a key left in it,only lockable before everyone retired to bed ? It may have been easy to listen-in if it was easy enough for Jeremy to just nip out with his rifle. Neville too was going back out again after his supper,so that part of the house wouldn't have been barred and shuttered.
The place would have been familiar to anyone who knew it.

Lookout, I'm not sure now whether you're clutching at straws or bunny rabbits. I fail to see how, just because Jeremy could open a door and "nip out with his rifle" it makes it easy for someone to listen in....................and to WHAT would they have BEEN listening?

What I'm trying to do is look for someone other than Sheila, leaving Jeremy out of the equation, who murdered the family that night, because I've never believed that Sheila pulled the gun on herself.
I won't clutch at straws or rabbits,it's not my style,I'm a realist.
