You did give me an answer. I was asking Gemma.

She answered but did not answer why.

With a 'gone crazy' Sheila upstairs with a loaded rifle & three sleeping women/children at 3am, Neville decided the best thing to do was ring Jeremy. Why ?

As AE said he could have just picked up a kitchen chair, taken it upstairs and charged her.
Yes how silly of me. Of course he would. ::)

Well a kitchen chair would protect his head and torso. Useful if you're iron man suit is being serviced.

You are doing very well Mr Gee.  :)

Personally I don't think NB or JB at the time ever  thought that Sheila would fire a shot. Going crazy could mean ranting and raving and talking incoherently. Its interpretations of words nothing more. It would seem they both made mistakes and underestimated the situation. Just sad mistakes made . It did not take many seconds for the situation to change and NB did not have time to protect himself once he heard the shots and she shot him.

 The gun was definitely a " spur of the moment "--------------nothing organised or arranged. It could sadly have been kitchen knives if the gun hadn't been available,as long as it was something that would inflict the most fatal of wounds,as that was the intention.

Best take the gun then if she was not going to fire a shot. A gun she had taken and apparently gone upstairs with (while 'going crazy).  And which later she used to fire off 25 + shots into the heads &  torso's of men,  women and children.

Ringing Jeremy  ::).

Like I have said before none of know what her mental state was on that night  and  I bet that none of the family knew what she was capable of . Hence why I said it would seem both Jb and NB in retrospect made mistakes . Its so easy to make comments in hindsight.

What if she was threatening to shoot herself Adam?
