No they couldn't - but how he chose to get there is another story.

Yes. Entirely.

has anyone actually seen the wording exactly of how he was tied to farming?

I am sure there were incentives because Neville wanted him to get more involved - but I don't think they would have actually cut him off totally if he had chosen to do something else

But he wouldn't have got the lot.

Sheila got 10,000 pounds while he got use of the farming operations. If he quit farming the farming operations would be sold and the proceeds split between Jeremy and Sheila.  So long as he farmed he got to use the farming assets and to keep all profits from the farming operations.  So basically it is like saying he got to keep running the family business and could keep the profits made as a result of running it but if he liquidated the business ever then she would get half the proceeds from the sale.

The business assets were not to be placed in Jeremy's name but rather held in trust that way if he ever sold it then Sheila would get her due.  With Sheila and her hers dead he would get the full proceeds form any sale.

As it was apparently a successful business I guess that's quite an incentive - wonder if Sheila was annoyed about that deal ::)

I think if he was interested, he's have shown an interest. Chris Nevill (who he stayed with) said he wasn't interested in farm work and worked in bars.
So? He felt like a change like most people of that age.

Do you know who would have got Sheila's London home?

And yet the estate manager relaying his recent conversation with NB said the opposite.

Suppose she was? It does rather open the door for discussion between them that steps might be taken to ensure them both getting ready cash. I'M ONLY SPECULATING!!!!

Sheila got $10,000 pounds right off the top for doing nothing.  He would only make money if he put in the hard work to keep it a successful operation. If he did a crappy job and it loses money then he doesn't make anything.

That is the way things were when the family was alive as well and why Jeremy was annoyed.  He had to work for the business in order to be provided a place to live, car and salary.  Sheila was provided with a place to live and money without any need to work for it.

If you like the family business and don't mind hard work then you can appreciate the great opportunity that is presented.  If you don't like the family business and don't want to work hard you will not view this as a great opportunity and might even view it as an attempt by them to control you beyond the grave.

Which is why I asked about the ownership of Sheila's London home. It rather looks to me as if she had it all..................for nothing, whilst Jeremy had to work for his, PROBABLY, at something he heartily resented. If he DID choose to give it up, he'd have to give Sheila half the proceeds on top of the £10,000 she'd already got, plus an expensive address(?) so, effectively, he'd be penalized for doing it. Whilst I could N EVER condone what I believ he did, I can TOTALLY understand that he may have wanted to. The will seems to give new meaning to being caught by the short and curlies.

Based on everything I have seen they gave her the ownership of the Flat free and clear before death it was not mentioned anywhere in either will. Part of Julie's testimony was that Jeremy resented the fact he had to work in exchange for what he was given as an adult while she was provided gifts.  He was given minority ownership rights in some of the ventures though while she wasn't.  I have no idea if the value of such minority interest in comparison to what she was given.

Well not exactly half- half of the parent's share. He owned a small stake in some of the ventures, he was given the stake before they died so it was his free and clear.  So he would get around 60% versus her getting 40% of the proceeds of the sale. It's still a sizable sum and enough to piss him off.

I think the Bambers must have understood that Sheila would need to be provided for all her life and short of the unliklihood of her finding a rich husband prepared to take on a woman with ongoing psych problems and a penchant for recreational drugs, the responsibility was theirs and it seems they were effectively passing it on to Jeremy. I can see he might be a tad pissed off by it.
