Just browsed this.
Over 30 'No comments' & 'can't remembers'. Over 10 -don't knows' & 'can't say'.
Several one word answers as well as vague answers such as 'not really', 'I think so' & 'less than 40 but more than 10 !'
The police had to often ask the same simple questions several times in order to get a straight answer. He initially said he phoned Mugford before the police & could not remember what they spoke about at 3am. He eventually said Mugford was phoned after the police phone call. He even suggested the dog fired the second shot at Sheila and Nevill said 'She', not 'Sheila' !
These interviews were several weeks after the deaths. Jeremy seemed to be recovering well & enjoying himself so could not use grief/shock as a reason for his poor performance.
Although he could not remember a lot, Jeremy took the brave decision to stand in the witness box, unlike OJ in another famous case 9 years later. Sadly Jeremy was apparently unconvincing. Apart from the famous 'that is what have to establish' quote, the judge had to repeatedly ask him to speak up. His claim that Mugford was lying under oath because he 'jilted her' made him seem arrogant.
After a long trial, the jury took just a day to return a guilty verdict.
Would he have got a 'not guilty' verdict with a better performance in court ? Or not taken the stand at all. Not sure of the British rules are regarding not taking the stand.
Or maybe if he had been more co-operative with the police in showing them how it was a murder/suicide, they would have continued in that direction.
