But who needed to practice on rats because he didn't have the stomach for murder - well, at least that's what Julie said anyway!  ::)

Hi NN, this business about Jeremy claiming to Muggy that he strangled rats has been covered previously.
One of Jeremy's duties on the B amber farm holdings was keeping a grip on the neverending problem of the rat population.
To do this meant laying down Warfarin, or similar dosage, in the drains or rat-runs. This  treatment is continued until such time that there is no take up of the bait.
The joking term of 'strangling' the rats was said in jest,  and when translated by Stan Jones, becomes:-
"I can say that Jerry says that he got in practice by strangling rats with his bare hands".

Morning Campion

Thank you for the clarification.  Yes I think I recall now.  This forum makes me feel old as I realise I forget things which I once wouldn't have done  :'( :'( :'(

Are you up for the forum trip to Osea Campion?  I thought you might be able to arrange a play for the Sat eve?  You sound like you might have a talent in that area.  Perhaps improvise using all the wetsuits, marigolds and balaclavas we have for the Goldhanger to WHF cycle ride?

Yes I'm afraid SJ didn't come out at all well in my conversations with the locals.  I should add that I didn't bring him into the conversation.  What is known about SJ ie his background?  If he's as nasty as the locals painted him there must surely be some reason  :-\ :-\ :-\

Although I don't know about rats at farms, I can certainly testify of mice on arable farms as I have seen hundreds of them at a time. The problem with rodent infestation of these farms is if course the fouling of the crop. If they get into wheat silos or dryers they can cause £1000's worth of damage. Because the whole crop must be destroyed. To kill rats is a necessity and I personally hold no sympathies with these ghastly beasts. I know someone who enjoys shooting them as they invade his chicken run. But he has no desire to murder people. So if Jeremy killed rats that does not naturally follow that he is a murderer. You townies must man up on these things. There are jobs on farms that need to be done. Also it may or may not surprise you that farmers in general are a harder race of people than townies. Where townies see a lovely fluffy bunny, the farmers see as a potential pest that can cause extreme damage to his crops.

Yes the old timers when the wheat was cut by hand had to tie the bottoms of their trousers for that purpose. To sto0p rodents running up their legs.
