After his sister's illness she was seen as unworthy as expressed by Jeremy's comments to Doris Foakes:"I'm not sharing any of my money with Sheila.."
Steve...........does it not occur to you that almost all of the people that had these damning things to say of Jeremy, had an agenda? And NOT ONE OF THEM could back up their allegations?

Hi NN,,but nobody told Sheila to lead her life as she did. Soft porn for instance. Can you imagine June sending her down that route.? What Sheila did,was under her own volition,,nobody else's,,and this is part of what I mean about her being reliant on the " good life ",,and her obvious unsettled mind of which steps to take next.
I think if Sheila hadn't touched the noxious substances, there might have been a chance that she'd have improved slowly but surely. Sadly,,she was looking for a way out,,and found it.

Hi Lookout

I think SC suffered from such low self-esteem that that's all she thought she was worth.  I really don't think she ever had a "good life".  She turned to the soft porn modelling out of desperation.

Excerpt from Claire Powell's book:

'She did it strictly to get money.  I think it all went back to Bambi's uneasy realationship with her parents.' claimed a friend.  'I think she felt her father in particular was disappointed in her.  Not angry, just disappointed that she hadn't done more in her life.  He wanted her to make something of herslef.  I think that's why she was so keen on trying to get a job - apart from the fact that she had no money - it was to show her father she was managing.'

NaNu/et al :) I feel I must ask your forgiveness in advance for what I'm about to suggest. I've known many girls with Sheila's background. Rarely do they seek permanent employment because their social life takes up the majority of their time, weekend starting Friday morning and ending Monday lunchtime. They do a little secretarial work for their family business OR the odd spot of waitressing in a wine bar owned by a friend, just for fun, but in the main it's killing time until Mr Right comes along.

Having read all the posts about Sheila's various jobs, I've found myself wondering if Sheila really wanted to work!!!! There, I've said it!!! She had the advantage of finishing school, but I don't know if she did actually finish, however she would have learned flower arranging, she would certainly have learned how to cater for dinner parties and run a charming home but she seems not to have used anything she learned. In stead, she tries her hand at hairdressing, long, long hours, hard work, and in the mid 70s, paying around £6 per week plus tips if the client liked the way she shampooed. I suspect Sheila liked the idea of glamour more than the idea of work which is why modelling appealed to her, but modelling requires a self discipline I imagine she lacked.

Maybe all she ever really wanted was someone to love her and babies of her own to hold. Maybe she wanted what she thought June had, a husband who provided her with a good life, paid the bills, and gave her an allowance.

I believe Sheila suffered the early symptoms of her illness possibly from her mid teens.
Her inability to hold down a job and general chaotic behaviour are all symptoms of
schizophrenia. Sheila came from academic parentage and should have been able to at least
perform to an average degree. Her apparent severe lack  self esteem was no doubt not helped
by June who failed to see any early signs of mental illness and classed her as bad not
Ill but its also a symptom of developing schizophrenia.  Sheila may very possibly have already been the victim of mental illness.  Schixophrenia takes years to become a full blown illness probably exacerbated after childbirth.imo

I think that Sheila wanted to work, but she was too ill to. She did try a lot of different jobs. Poor Sheila, I think she was a smart girl, but it all went terribly wrong.
I agree with NN that Sheila must have had very low self esteem, and no doubt, it came from her upbringing - in short! Everybody else has elaborated on that, so no need for me to do that!  ;D

I wonder if it may have been easier for Nevill and June to say she hadn't made her mind up about what she wanted to do than accept that she was ill.

Hi All
April, It doesn't seem as if they realised she was ill until she was well into her illness.  I get the impression June thought she was badly behaved and I don't suppose Nevill would have any idea, he'd just think June knew what she was talking about.  Could be wrong there may have been at least some of your take ie.  waiting for hubby but Sheila seemed to be hopelessly lost from quite an early age.  By the time June and Neville realised anything was wrong, she was very ill. She could have been viewing the world slightly differently than what is perceived as normal for quite a long time imo.
