Why have we got this thread about June and Sheila. Personally I find it disrespectful.  We dont know what their relationship was like...only other peoples opinions. Imo

Maggie, I think June was a gentle woman who loved her own mother dearly and visited her nearly everyday.  I just don't think she could handle two modern children, with a total different outlook on life....None the less, she did protect Sheila when she found Colin in the field with her, when she had come out of hospital....June blamed Colin, for she found them naked....she was furious like any mother would be after her daughter had just come out of hospital....I think June was misunderstood. Colin makes it clear that he disliked her, maybe that was because she wanted to protect her.... :) :) :) :)

Maggie  I am sure June and Ralph did their best as parents and that would be all they could do.  I can assure you had my Mum and Dad found me naked in a field I would have known about so would the lucky fella.  Probably Colin did not like June as she would not let him have all his own way.  Whatever happened in the Bamber family would not be all down to Ralph and June some of our behaviour is in the genes and Sheila and Jeremy would have got that from their birth parents.

Patti, I think June could be described as unworldly. She was a dutiful daughter to a rather autocratic and intimidating mother who had taught her that the world was full of sin and wickedness. I imagine June sometimes found the world a difficult place to live in and would have done all she could to prevent her children from becoming tarnished by it. It's not impossible that Granny S had warned her about the "bad blood" known to flow through the veins adopted children, and if it was God's will that she couldn't have children, she would be defying him by adopting. She would undoubtedly have softened after she came to love Jeremy, but her words may have made June more conscious of their behaviour than she otherwise would have been.

I don't know April?  I don't know the family, so in all fairness I can't make assumptions about them. No matter what they all suffered a great tragedy, dead or alive....it must be difficult for all concerned to live with....I look at the photo in the archives of June, Shelia and Jeremy and what a normal happy family they looked, all arm in arm stood in the kitchen....I wonder what the dogs name is that Sheila is holding?   :) :) :) :)

The following was shown earlier in the week:

Jeanette Winterson: My Monster and Me

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01p9b9c/imagine..._Winter_2012_Jeanette_Winterson_My_Monster_and_Me/

For those of you who don't know, Jeanette is a best-selling author who has won many literary awards.  She was adopted at birth (I think) 1960 and raised by Mrs Winterson in Accrington.

There are striking parallels between Jeanette Winterson and her adoptive mother, who she only ever referred to as Mrs Winterson, and June and Sheila:

Mrs Winterson is a religious fanatic who refers to Jeanette as the Devil's child and preaches 24/7.

Jeanette attempts suicide when her partner leaves (female - she's a lesbian) (More men for us girls  :) )

Jeanette meets with her birth mother.

(Patti you will love it.  Right up your street quite literally.  Plenty of 2 ups and 2 downs some with running water and electricity.  They say 'boooook' instead of 'book'.  Patti I love you really despite our cultural differences  ;)  :) )

We say book, you say buk  :P

April....I'm not so sure regarding Granny Speakmans attitude to adoption? I believe that she herself adopted a child,or at least took a child in and raised said child as her own?

Jeremy was Granny Speakmans' favourite. She doted on him.

Tyler, Hi. The willingness to adopt a child doesn't always denote warmth and love. I was adopted. "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit" will tell you much of my own experiences..............however, unlike Steve, I wasn't catagorically saying it was that way with Granny S, more, throwing possibilities out for discussion. I knew two people who knew her. One was terrified of her, the other said coins would be tossed because nobody would volunteer their time for her, but against that, I'm certain there will be many who will have found her delightful.

Hi Caroline

The only two Southeners who refer to a 'book' as 'buk' are the Queen and Hyacinth Bucket pronounced "Bouquet".  But in every Southener lurks a little Hyacinth, even if only in the little finger one raises pependicular when sipping, usually Earl Grey, from a cup.  Of course in the North you have your big mugs of Yorkshire tea to slurp from which double up as a face wash to remove all the grime which continues to float in the atmosphere from the once successful industrial towns/coal mines.

The North has three redeeming qualities:

Landscape/areas of natural beauty
Manchester United Football Club
The Smiths/Morrisey

 ;)  ;D

Er what coal mines?  What steel works?  There is no pollution where I live we have lichen attached to our roofs lol.

Plus I only drink tea from a china cup/mug...it tastes better.  Are we really a north and south divide? Ha!  :) :) :) :)

I have a foot in both worlds.  Born a Southerner and brought up to speak the Queen's English.  Which was then beaten out of me by the brutish northerners  :D

Hi Susan

Where you say drinking out of a cup and saucer I assume you mean you drink any spills straight from the saucer  :P Denby is now made in China  :(
