it is tricksy, i studied to get my nvq2 and 3 in health and social care, i was made a senior then went on a moving and handling trainers course, i trained the nurses and other carers on the safe handling of residents using hoists and other aids, and i was paid 6.70 per hour. i clean at a school now and get 7.00 per hour. it doesnt make sense!!! i also worked 12 hr shifts including weekends for the same pay rate.
ive signed for a nursing agency now and do caring when i can on a weekend the pay is better with an agency. i like the job i did too, i was also a personal assistant for a man with physical and learning disabilities, and iam on the assist register, the pay was a bit better for that. but there you go thats life!!

Couldn't agree more with Tricksy.

Due to the appalling reports some social services depts have received across the country, social workers salaries are soaring and numbers increasing. But those on the frontline, caring for elderly, vulnerable, children, are still on low hourly rates rather than decent salaries and hours. Now they're going to want people to volunteer to do it...
It seems those who are really good at being hands on with people are punished for it.
Afraid I've reached the conclusion that it's because this is deemed 'women's work' and they aren't breadwinners, are they? Ha-seething-ha...

I totally agree with both of you.

The carer's my father has are brilliant and a couple of them, I would say are exceptional at what they do. They really all do deserve a decent wage.

Mb1, don't tell me that carer's are expected to become part of the Big Society thing too? Cause that's what it sounds like?  :o

Andrea, the pay difference is just crazy!  >:(
I also find that the carer's who are really easy going and accomadating get put upon with extra shifts, as you say, for no extra pay.

"Ghost of maddie"

Whilst on a recent fact finding holiday in Portugal, I took the following picture inside a derelict building opposite the church at Priai De Luz...

Hey Mike

I have done some forensic analyzing of the 7th picture down and have the following conclusion.

That is your shadow in the picture not a ghost sorry to disappoint on this one.

I instinctively feel that Maddie is dead...

I am sorry, I am overcome with grief...

Maddie is "gone", no more to be "returned", to the parents, or  to "us"...

I sincerely hope that I am wrong...

Who is the child in the second photo?  For one minute I thought it was Maddie aged about 7!

Those tree pics are really creepy....

-------------------------------------

Don't know who child is / was, photographs taken either side of this picture, seconds apart, do not show any child. Location of building in this picture is directly opposite church at PDL, Portugal, where I believe body of Maddie was taken on or about the evening of 3 May 2007...

Me too. Mike, are you saying that when you took that picture, there was no child there?

I did not actually see a child there when I took the picture, but it is possible that a child entered the field of view when the picture was taken. The photograph's taken either side of this particular photograph, taken seconds apart does not show such a child in that location - that is what I am saying...

Hope this explanation is helpful...
