No idea of whether he did or not.

However, they should not have been destroyed at such an early stage as they were potentially a source of evidence.

If it is true, then JB should not have been put in a position where he could authorise the police to destroy the carpets.

Irrespective of the fact that forensic technology was nowhere near as advanced as it is today, this was still evidence from a crime scene so should have been preserved. (in my opinion!)

Vidvic, I can't give you a definite answer, but when someones consents to something it suggests that a request has previously been made. That being the case, I can only think that the police had finished extracting whatever they required from them and they were of no further use, but Jeremy's consent would have been needed before they were disposed of.

I was of the understanding that it was a request from the police and Jeremy said it was OK....I don't imagine that Jeremy could have made a demand.  I can't understand why the police would destroy such items.  They certainly would not do it in 2012.  They would have secured the house as a crime scene.  Although 27 years ago does not seem that long ago, it makes you wonder what the police were thinking of at the time.  Did they get all the samples they required? I'm not sure.

They could Lugg.  Did they not go back and take the main bedroom carpet up?  I remember that AE in her statement 1991 told of where she had invited her mother Pam and was worried that she would see the gaps in the carpet, so she brought a carpet from the outside shed and laid that over it,,to cover the carpet where police had taken samples???

On the crimes that shook britain programme it says he did beause the police wanted things to be destroyed that might have caused him further distress. I don't know if they'd be destroyed these days due to DNA techniques and it's enhanced use in crime detection etc. I just wonder if the destroyed thing would have yielded any useful information?

Very relevant post Joanne01,  I believe the WHF Murders in the series 'Crimes that shook Britain', was created with the participation   of the Relatives who control the farmhouse.
  So it appears that they said that owing to distress, he asked EP to destroy the carpets etc.
   We may say that if Taff Jones was requested, he would have justifiably said-'Don't tell me how to do my job'
  Thus Taff has been directed, from above, to do the necessary !

I've always thought it was odd that they were destroyed so quickly and I guess had they kept samples they would have now revealed quite a lot.

Hi Caroline,,seemingly they took enough carpet fibres to have knitted another rug,but I don't recollect seeing any results.

I have never heard of any other case where evidence was destroyed so quickly. I know at the beginning they thought it was four murders and a suicide however, they collected evidence from the scene so were obviously still making sure by looking at this evidence - surely the carpets would have been pretty important in deciding who died where so to burn them so quickly is odd.

That's right Caroline.There could have been soil/mud,anything brought in from outside that may have been significant.
