Hi Roch,,it's an old family surname of ours that runs along from Hadrians' Wall into Northumberland ( Northumbria ) as it was in Roman Times. As well as the pub,,there's an old fort ( the ruins ) named after the family as well.An old uncle of mine who was a historian, gave me all kinds of information regarding this. Uncle reckoned that the name was inscribed in one of the stones along the wall, but I've never checked that out.
The pub is in Chester road,Sunderland,Roch.
There's some ruins near me called Arbeia. On the wall side of the Tyne there are Vindolanda and Segedenum but I think you are referring to one of the settlements further west. I have a name in my head of which one.
The name is Chesters,Roch. Some great history.
It's near Chollerford (Hexham). West of Newcastle in the Tyne Valley.Never been to the pub in Sunderland but I used to hear it was a popular watering hole.
