I have just spent the last five minutes trying to compose a post that says exactly that! Thank you!!
Hi Neil The question relating to the clothes Jeremy wore on that night has been raised many times. I think one officer claimed he arrived well dressed. I doubt trainers, jeans and jumpers are deemed as being well dressed. If you note all the photographs of Jeremy in the archives it was his usual dress sense to wear several jumpers and a open neck shirt underneath them. I think the police tried to make a mountain out of what Jeremy was wearing at the time. I agree with you, he wore them to keep warm. I dare say the police wore their jackets too.
Maldon and Tollesbury were and are sub stations and the telephones are not manned. If you have ever seen Witham police station you would know what I am talking about. It is quite a big station.
Telephones are not manned. Unprofessional. Chelmsford were lucky that Witham picked up their call then.
If it is a big station it must cover a large area. Thought there would be someone able to answer the phone to the public. You never know who might be holding a gun. Aren't farms very prone to burglaries ? Perhaps a good idea to have police available.
My friend's husband was stationed there. I know it well, Grahame. I can't avoid it if I go into Witham :D

Not entirely 21st century, are they.
I was just thinking that myself,April. I appreciate that these places only operate a skeleton staff at night, but that place was fairly skeletal.
Unfortunately Adam that is so. But something that has not been considered is this. But I don't know if this existed in 1985: If you phone Maldon police the call goes straight through to Chelmsford. So if this system existed in 1985 then if Bamber had called Witham or Maldon or even Tollesbury (which I don't think exists today? ) then his call would have been answered. By Chelmsford.
Lookout, 99% of the time, back then, there was no need for them to be otherwise. We're talking about a rural Essex backwater. Take a step too far and you're in the water. Even now, although crime rates HAVE risen, there's very little major crime in these areas.
Quite a few unsolved crimes there though all the same. All from the past, prior to WHF and just after.
