Bews's statement said Jeremy requested it. Which wouldn't surprise me. He had rang her at 3am to let her know 'everything is going well. There is something wrong at the farm'.
But surely you must allow for, that under the circumstances, asking him if there was someone he wanted to call, was a reasonable thing to do. All they knew, at the time, was that in all likelihood, this man's entire family were dead and he had no one there to support him.
Adam I work at a school in the evenings. If I have to phone the police I have a special police number to phone instead of me having to dial 999.Now I know that Bamber did not have a special number to phone. But his father being a majestrate might have influenced the way he was thinking? Who knows, perhaps at witham the person who picked up the phone might be someone he or his father knew? After all the majestrates court is right next door to the police station, well just behind it. But as I said before, it was around 3 in the morning, he was not properly awake. The police had been awake all night. There was a chill in the air, especially in the countryside at that time. All these factors could have governed Bamber's actions that morning.
Why do you think he chose to wear so much clothing, if not merely to stay warm?
The statement does not say the police asked him if there was someone he wanted to call.
He said he phoned Witham but there was no reply. Thought police station phones were manned 24/7. Perhaps the officers were having a nap. Chelmsford rang Witham. Guess what ? The phone was answered.
Hi Neil The question relating to the clothes Jeremy wore on that night has been raised many times. I think one officer claimed he arrived well dressed. I doubt trainers, jeans and jumpers are deemed as being well dressed. If you note all the photographs of Jeremy in the archives it was his usual dress sense to wear several jumpers and a open neck shirt underneath them. I think the police tried to make a mountain out of what Jeremy was wearing at the time. I agree with you, he wore them to keep warm. I dare say the police wore their jackets too.
Hi Adam The police contacted an officer who worked at Witham via radio, not the telephone Adam. Witham was not open to the public that night, in other words no one was answering the phone. Jeremy must have called them in order to tels Chelmsford no one answered. I don't think this telephone call to Witham was under dispute. To be fair, not calling 999 has always bothered me, but we have to remember this was 29 years ago and we have to give him the benefit of the doubt that he might have thought it was better to phone his local station, rather than phone 999.
His local stations were either Tollesbury or Maldon.
Well it could have been the same clothes he wore at the massacre . Several layers of protective clothing would be appropriate. If no blood was spilled there was no reason to change. Putting on a shirt. Two jumpers and a jacket, does highlight that he was not in a hurry. And concerned about not getting a chill. Perhaps more concerned than Sheila going crazy with a gun. Then again everyone knows that he was not in a hurry.
Yes Patti that sounds a reasonable explanation to me. I believe much that is said about Bamber's attitude and dress and black hair is mostly just hype in order to make him look like the archetypal murderer and that everything he does is as suspicious as hell. It would be rather funny in a way if it were not so cynical.
Maldon and Tollesbury were and are sub stations and the telephones are not manned. If you have ever seen Witham police station you would know what I am talking about. It is quite a big station.
