one neighbour erected CCTV cameras on his house to collect evidence of their behaviour. But Harold Malone was warned by police that he should not stray outside for fear of being attacked.

Is there any CCTV evidence?

Jordan Cunliffe, aged 16, was the youngest member of the gang. Originally from Harold Wood, Essex, he was raised on the same street as Swellings by his single mother Janet Cunliffe, 38, after she split from his father, engineer David Hough.

Miss Cunliffe is an ice-cream wrestler - a bizarre sport where scantily-clad women wrestle in ice- cream in front of male onlookers in bars across the North West - who works under the stage name Jade.

As a consequence, she was rarely around in the evenings and, with no father figure to discipline him, her son was free to roam the streets, drinking strong cider and vandalising cars and property at will.

He was unemployed and had a previous conviction for shoplifting.
