can anyboder think of a way an outside intruder could have got into whf without the dogs noticeing them and allerting the family.

If I wanted to break into a house I would deal with the dogs first. The outside dog first and then crispy who I did not like. ;) But I should think that even if crispy knew me it would have barked anyway as they tend to do. But then again who's to say they didn't alert the occupants if indeed there was an intruder of course?

well yes theirs no proof the dogs dident alert the family

then agian the outside dogs might have barked at anything so the family might have just ignored them.
