BBC Documentary

There is an interesting BBC online article about the case, and a three part documentary on iPlayer.
Even the investigator appointed to help the defence is now convinced that Ross is guilty.

He didn't help himself with his jail break attempt.

I'm not convinced of Michael's innocence. I'm still pretty sure of Eddies though I dont think he covered up for Micheal I think  he just did his job.

I do not regard his various escape attempts as an indication of guilt but they are likely to extend the time he serves before eventually being released on licence.  His minimum is 25 years but I suspect he may serve 30.

As far as Eddie is concerned if you look in detail at the evidence he was guilty of perverting the course of justice.  He realised the significance of the ammunition type and initially hoped he could get away without saying anything.  He came forward when it was clear that the police were going to find out and he tried to persuade the witness to lie about the opened box of ammunition.  Although there is no evidence I also suspect he knew about the pistol and realised very early on that Michael was responsible.

Although the defence solocitor was interviewed and strongly supported Michael it is significant that his trial counsel declined to be interviewed.

In my view there is a very low chance of a successful appeal in this case.  The documentary really does not take the matter any further and the suggestion of a professional hitman was very poorly developed.  The defence investigator's reference to a witness he had traced who convinced him of Michael's guilt is obviously very interesting but in the absence of any detail we do not know whether it is powerful evidence.

You may be right nugnug.  If Eddie Ross had simply thrown away the unopened box of ammunition he might have got away with it.  He was in a difficult position.  He took a risky course of action thinking he would probably be able to tough it out.  The problem was that all his colleagues in Kirkwall Police realised that Michael Ross was responsible and that his father knew and was covering for him.  I have some sympathy for him because he has gone through hell, but he was wrong and particularly as a police officer he has to accept the consequences. It is significant that none of his colleagues stood up for him - they all realised what had happened.
