Seems at one point pre massacre Bamber had not done any research on phones.

He didn't even know Nevill's phone only covered a few hundred yards!

He may have done some research later on. Either way, he was no rush to ring Chelmsford Police when arriving back at GH.

What was the purpose in the portable phone if it couldn't reach Goldhanger which is just three miles away?
I think Adam means the distance to the base station inside the house ILB, the base station would be connected to the landline.  The early portable phone had limited range.

I have posted the range of these phones in 1985.

No way any portable phone would make 3+ miles.
If it connected to the base station he could call anywhere, the base station inside the house connected to the landline, the base station offered a bridge transmitting the signal from the handset to the telephone line.  It was the signal to the base station inside the house that was limited from outside or if the signal (radio wave ) was poor.

All they did was allow freedom of movement within a radius, if you got a signal to the base station, you could call anywhere, the base station would be the charging point for the phone battery.

Cordless phones in 1985 relied on a base unit connected to a landline, and the handset communicated with this base unit wirelessly. The range was typically limited to a building or a short distance from the base station.

Always wonder what the scope of his research may have been.

Although comes across as a more " here and now " type of guy than a planner and a thinker.

He may have just got lucky.

If attempted the call on this phone and couldn't get through he'd simply abandon it, not massively detrimental at all.

If he could call GH from WHF on the portable phone using the base unit, it would have given his narrative a short term boost. Due to the 'last number dialled' display.

The police would quickly say it was him calling GH.

Julie's WS saying he planned to use it would not have helped either.

If the portable phone refused to ring GH as it was too far, he could revert to using a WHF phone.

By the time he was under suspicion and under arrest it was nearly two months down the line.

If this had played out this way but just a different choice of phone would be difficult to see how it would pan out

Maybe two phones out of action and the cream bedroom phone taken downstairs in the kitchen to replace the kitchen phone, and Sheila and the boys in attendance at the farm,  is why it had to be the night for the murders

The bike was also ready.

You have lost me Adam? you cannot call your own number from a mobile phone into which the base unit is connected even if the phone had sufficient range?

I think he’s saying, if you call Goldhanger from WHF Rob?  The portable was at WHF and Adam’s saying Bamber called his own house number to make out his Dad called from WHF?  Confusing I know  ;D
