Yes I recall it.  I did read it once but can't recall reference to a gym.  I thought JB secured JM some seasonal work at Maldon Growers and the bike was to be used to get to and from when staying at GH and/or general use when she was staying at GH and JB was working.

It was even more of a forensic mistake if he let Julie & the relatives see a bike he didn't use.

Not really a forensic mistake. In fairness I doubt he envisioned any prospective prosecution in reference to it.

24 year old fit guy, had a motor could drive could cycle.

First time he is put on the spot about the bike is the September interviews.

He says the bike has been at the cottage six to eight weeks from that date.

Saying an arrival time about July 85.

He quantifies it was for julie.

But could you not find your bearings from knowing the sun was heading west?

You don't get true darkness until just over one hour after the Sun sets. Once you lose the horizon you are in trouble.

If I could have seen Polaris I probably would have been ok, but my phone got me out of trouble anyway.

Didn't need to answer questions on the bike. Just needed to keep the bike out of sight from Julie & the relatives.

A bike made a route which did not pass properties plausible for the relatives and police. Supported by Julie's WS & court testimony then the judges summing up.

Walking a round trip of 8.4 miles would have been much less convincing.

The prosecution could still say he cycled to/from WHF if no bike was seen at GH.

They could say he used one of the WHF bikes and returned it to WHF. Or bought or stole a bike then disposed of it.

They could also use Julie's WS & court testimony that he planned to cycle.

But all less convincing if no bike was seen at GH.

They could have said " He cycled there then walked back to gold hanger to give the impression the bike never left WHF"

It is not what he said in his police interviews but to be fair there appears to be two needs associated with the bike, one local and one further afield:

- According to his police interviews it was brought over for JM to get to and from Maldon Growers and general transport when staying at GH

- According to JM's wit stats she wanted JB to take the bike to London so maybe she intended to use it to get to and from a gym in London but based on her physique then and now she does not appear to look like a gym bunny.
