1977.
The Guy, Billy Hughes was a monster Steve, it's one of the worst Murders i have ever read about. Originally from Preston, he moved to Chesterfield when he met a woman from Boythorpe and he moved in with her. he later raped a woman in Chesterfield and was locked up in HMP Leicester.
Peter Howse and my Cousin were the first two officers at the scene when Billy first made the escape from the van taking him from Prison to the Magistrates court, he attacked both prison officers inside the vehicle. He first attacked Sprintall, stabbing him in the back of the neck and narrowly missing his spine, he worked in the Prison Kitchen and stole a knife. It had snowed really heavily and he made his escape along Beeley Moor [ it's very bleak over there in the Winter and not far from the Chatsworth Estate] to the house of the Moran Family, [pottery Cottage] on the main Chatsworth Road to Baslow.
Peter Howse, actually saves the only survivour Gill Moran later in a Stand off...............After approximately fifty minutes of negotiations, Hughes' patience snapped. He screamed "Right! Your time's up!" and swung the axe at Gillian's head.[34] Simultaneously, Howse jumped through the rear window of the vehicle, partly parrying the blow from the weapon (which gashed Gillian's forehead) while a firearms officer named Frank Pell fired one shot through the shattered rear passenger window, which deflected off Hughes' skull.[34] Hughes then struck Howse once upon the arm with the axe as Gillian attempted to cower against the door of the vehicle. As he bit deeply into Howse's arm as he continued to attempt to strike Gillian, a further three rounds were fired, the last of which entered Hughes' shoulder, passing through his aorta and killing him.[81] Hughes' body fell across Gillian's lap.[82] The final and fatal shot was fired by an officer named Alan Nicholls.[83]
