Because he admitted in police interviews he knew of various ways to gain access to the farm  house. And had done so on many occasions

He made such a entry post the massacre when getting his car insurance documents from WHF for his trip to France with Brett.

He didn't admit he knew about the lockable from outside window. He said he didn't know about it.

Although Julie knew about it .

He didn't deny anything if I recall from reading interview transcripts. He said ," various ways"

The conversation moved on to Julie's knowledge which he then replied ," you must ask her ,"
If yesterday you hated me. Then today you can not stop the love that binds from me to you. And you to me

This was a lie as Julie knew about one.

Thanks.

As with the cycle journey, the defence would agree it was possible to get in/out & bang a window shut. Then say there is no proof he did.

I would find that form of defence unconvincing.
As with any trial, the burden of Proof is with the Prosecution.

Lots of proof inside that it wasn't Sheila. Which wasn't really disputed at the time.

The defence simultaneously agreeing it was possible to cycle & get inside WHF, then leave & bang a window shut.

Wasn't really a bad defence. It was well regarded. Just that they couldn't really dispute a lot.
