Without getting into, from my perspective anyway, his index offence which has given him the notoriety that he has. Looking at it from a long term forward prospective. It becomes abundantly clear that Mr Venables should spend the rest of his life in custody.

He is clearly a damaged and dangerous individual. And has been from childhood. I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist. But his adulthood reoffending suggests a potential lethal pattern of offending is emerging ( child pornography offences) Can this person live in society again? In my opinion he is damaged beyond repair. I also think more importantly that he will commit further offences if released. May not happen straight away but it will do. Perhaps even of the same nature of what got him the notoriety he has.

This is not me being bleeding hearted, or having sympathy for Venables, I am an ex prisoner, so far from it. It's just logical if you look at the whole circumstance sensibly without going down the line of " hang the bastard etc etc ".

The guy was damaged as young as ten. He is now 40 odd. He will never change and be productive. He has to stay in custody in my view

It was also suggested that Robert Thompson was the more evil of the two originally.

Having said that, it appears that Thompson has lived a crime free life since re-entering society.

How can any psychiatrist or other medical professional really know what goes on inside another person's head? Look at Robert Card, a similar age to John Venables, who was released from hospital after two weeks' evaluation and has just murdered 18 people and injured 13 others in Maine, USA.

I looked into Jon Venables background. His was one of three children both his siblings had learning difficulties. His parents by all accounts were decent people and although separated both played a part in his upbringing. At the time of the crime they were considering a reconciliation.

I think he should remain in custody for life.

Don't think parenting, poverty or anything in particular was to blame.

Maybe the two of them were just not wired correctly from birth

Believe Venables dad watched a lot of horror films such as Chuckie. Slasher type films. Maybe the young Jon venables witnessed this. I don't know. Don't know about Thompson's motives but apparently he came from a tougher background from venables one of seven children, alcoholic mother, absent father.

It was just a freak event in its totality. Horrible.

If both of them had been a year younger they would have not been able to be tried for the offence. As they would have been under the age of criminal responsibility.

Can you forgive 10-year-old boys for such a heinous crime? Why wasn't the regular truanting from primary school picked up on? Venables has done himself no favours since the murder, downloading child pornography, associating with like-minded individuals in chatrooms, disclosing his real identity, downloading a paedophile manual. Is there any chance of rehabilitation: I doubt it.

Venables has lived a lie since he was ten. He Is now 40 odd years old. I am surprised he has slept a night peacefully due to what is hanging over him. I'm not having sympathy for Venables but to put it bluntly he will be a fucked up individual due to the crime he did in childhood, and all the saga after it.

Yes what he did was evil.and yes he will remain a danger. I can't see such an individual making a normal life for himself. It's clear the guy has sexual predilections towards children. I think custody or a severely curtailed freedom is the only option, but for the latter can the taxpayer stretch for it. Can a police team watch him 24 hours a day

Case baffles me in its entirety.

On the day of the crime. Venables mum had given him a permission note to take to his teacher so he could take the gerbils home classroom pets for the upcoming term break.

On route to school, he met Thompson, decided to play truant and head to the shopping centre in Bootle strand. And the rest is evil history.

Wonder which boy made the first move.

Interesting fact about the case is that prior to abducting James both boys had made another attempt to adbduct another child before being foiled in the attempt.

Which means that one or both had a pre plan in mind

Although it was suggested by some that Thompson displayed more evil traits, Venables was the person who suggested they approach James. Also, the fact that Venables displayed emotion and cried every day in court can be used to argue that his actions were worse as he ‘knew’ what he was doing was wrong, whereas Thompson displayed more psychopathic traits and showed minimal, if any emotion.
