Under what circumstances would each be used?  Or is it just a personal preference thing?

Have you never played any FPS games Cambridge?

For short range shooting iron sights are better.  For longer range shooting telescopic sights are better, provided that they have been properly zeroed.

At point blank range like the shootings in WHF would a shooter use the sights at all ngb?

At point blank range it would not matter whether the telescopic sights were fitting or not, because as that range the rifle would not be aimed in the ordinary sense (shoulder mounted looking through the sights) but would rather be pointed and fired.

Agree, scope would not be needed for close range shooting and make the Rifle lighter to control.  Having thought about it, Bamber didn't need it for long range either when he went to shoot rabbits.

Personally, I doubt they were on the rifle.

DB said the rifle with sights would be harder for close range shooting.

From the photos I have seen of sights on rifles, it does look like it would make the whole process more ackward.

Doubtful Bamber went to supper at WHF regulary. He would want to get home & check his phone messages.

The last supper was to get his story & do reconnaisance.

However with Sheila at WHF he may have gone to supper more that week. To monitor Sheila. This would have given him opportunities to remove the sights.

As ngb says above Adam, if you are not actually aiming but just pointing and shooting then the sights being on or off the rifle makes little difference.

Bamber could easily have put them back on if he so wished after all according to you he staged everything else, if they were not zeroed in no one would know.

Are the sights weighty? I think the rifle would be more cumbersome at close range combat?

I agree Roch, if your at close quarter shooting Feet/Metre's you don't need them.  The whole point is. Did or would Bamber need them for longer range shooting of Rabbits [small Objects]

why would Neville remove them to clean them and why didn't he put them straight back on and why the need to box them and put them at the back of the cupboard?  Removing them and putting them back on could have altered the range they had been set at slightly by the shop at 200 yds [It doesn't always though]?

The sights are fairly light I would say, but if Bamber was worried about being hindered by them then there is little chance of him using the silencer. With low velocity bullets makes little difference to humans anyway.

I don't see the connection myself.

.

You think having the sound moderator on is less cumbersome in close combat?

Well I do, you are trying to say the sights were removed to make the rifle easier to handle. Well if this was the reason for their removal then there is zero chance of Bamber using the rifle with the silencer on.

The silencer would really make the rifle cumbersome at close quarters, plus with the bullets used virtually makes no difference.

He probably thought, one was needed the other one wasn't, we can argue all day about how much noise it suppresses, but look at the wording SILENCER, they have this name for a reason.

Both parties have to go by the evidence -

Sights on rifle 28th/29th July.

Sights off rifle 6th August.
