DB said the rifle without sights would be a lot easier to fire at close range without the sights.
Agree, scope would not be needed for close range shooting and make the Rifle lighter to control.  Having thought about it, Bamber didn't need it for long range either when he went to shoot rabbits.

I thought the point of sights was to be more accurate at long range.

Going out without sights or silencer but with several bullets is not credible.

What's the object against the ruler at 3 - 4 cm?

It is part of the end sight fitted to the barrel for use when telescopic sights are not fitted.  The central "prong" in the middle of the circular shroud is lined up with the target.

Thanks.  Does it come as factory fitted?

Yes, it is called the foresight.  Usually people who shoot rifles refer to the alternative types of sights as iron sights or telescopic sights.

I wouldn't fancy being a grouse, when you're around ngb. I suspect you're a deadeye shot.

I am not bad but by no means a marksman!   You would have to be very good to shoot grouse with a rifle!

Special keys are needed to take them off. This and the length of time it takes, rules out them being taken off just before the massacre. Once inside WHF, he would want to be as silent as possible and get upstairs quickly.

Taking them off during supper is possible. Providing Nevill did not see him. Not sure when Nevill did the last trailer. Bit risky relying on getting an opportunity a few hours beforehand.
It makes me suspect the murder weapon had disappeared from view by the Tuesday evening.

No special keys are needed to remove the telescopic sights.  It is quick and easy.

Am going by AP's WS - removal by Alleyn key or pliers.

Usually no tool is necessary.  If it is in the case of a particular sight mount it only takes seconds.

Under what circumstances would each be used?  Or is it just a personal preference thing?

For short range shooting iron sights are better.  For longer range shooting telescopic sights are better, provided that they have been properly zeroed.
