There are only three possibilities regarding the phone calls:

1) He knew calls could be traced.
2) He knew calls in his area could not be traced.
3) He was not sure.

In the case of 3) he was not sure he would have to proceed as if the calls could be traced.

In case 1) if he knows the calls are traceable he has to give the correct time when questioned.

In case 2) he is free to say whatever he wants "Officer I phone the police immediately" no delay.

Number 1 is not an option.

He could not know that as it was not the case.

The easiest thing is to call his AM & let it pick up.

This will only take 30 seconds.

There is no point in staging a call if gulity.

He has to travel back home

Julie's WS says he planned to phone his AM with the last number dialled portable phone.

This was not available on the night.

So likely he phoned his AM with the cream kitchen phone.

What difference does it make, if the calls are not traceable he does not have to bother calling his AM at all?

Most phones in them days did not give the time the call was made.

Well the prosecution case is he phoned his AM, cycled back, phoned Julie and then phoned the police.

Agree he did not have to phone his AM if he (correctly) knew calls could not be traced.

This may explain why he phoned Julie a long time before the police.

If gulity then he must have believed that calls could be traced.

Otherwise it's a fruitless excersise phoning goldhanger from WHF

Why does Julie not say 3.15am then in her initial statement?

Why does she not ever say in subsequent statements Bamber coached her on what to say ?

No idea.

Not really relevant. He was speaking to the police at 3.30am.

His call to Julie was either 3.00am or 3.15am.

You accept julie lied then by saying 3.30am in the first WS

She wasn't mistaken. Susan a day previous had apparently told her the time of 3.15

If Bamber told her it was 3.30am, she would go by what he said.

However he phoned her at 3.00am or 3.15am.

Impossible. None of the flat mates said it was after 3.30am.

He had to get to WHF by 3.48am. Driving very slowly.

Julie's diaries on day 8/8/85 do mention phone time discussions with Bamber.

Will try to translate.

It's an eight minute drive. Bews said he was going at 30mph.

Bews and myall said they got the report from HQ at 3.45am.

Saxby recalls it at 3.35/.3.40
