Have you read Jacobin before ngb? Looks like an interesting publication. I posted a link up in another thread.

I have come across it before but it is not something I read regularly.  The problem is that I subscribe to so many journals that I a never able to keep up to date with everything.

You must have a lot of reading with your marmalade and toast ngb.

Too much.  I will have to consider cancelling some subscriptions.

Why not consider audio format which would enable you to listen on the go?

Yes. French, German plus O Level Spanish. I would like a drier climate than the one I'm in currently. Plus it must be a predominantly Christian country. Other than that I'm open to ideas. If I can't make a decision I'll stay put in England.

But the weather in England is very different based on North v South and East v West.  I live south west of Cambridge and just in the last 5 years my main consideration now when gardening is the drought resistance of plants.  I've also noticed with annual plants that a few years ago plants that would die early winter due to frosts can survive in sheltered positions as the frosts are getting less/severe.

There are several candidates.  Malta is very pleasant and English is quite widely spoken and British people are welcomed - family memories of the war are still there.  Crete is for the same reason very welcoming to the British and I believe it is still possible to buy property there quite cheaply.  Cyprus is another possibility.  Ireland would probably suit you save for the fact that it is generally wetter than the UK.  There are some parts where property prices are OK but around Dublin prices are extremely high.  Portugal used to be welcoming to British with cheap properties and an overall favourable tax environment but I think that may have changed now.

These places are great for holidays but I personally would not want to live in any of them or even have a second home there.

Other than the crippling heat in summer, I think Malta would be a great place to live as they love the British. It may have changed since I was last there, though. I'm not sure that anywhere in Greece -including Southern Cyprus- is a good bet for buying. Way too many under the table type deals. You'd certainly need a good lawyer.

Have you considered what these places might be like on a cold, wet and windy day during winter?  You could visit the Charles Dickens museum if its open in the winter.

Yes, I've had it for a lifetime in Manchester, even in July. One does accustom oneself to it. Leisure pursuits are inside though: gym, reading. I'd like to do more walking. I am whittling down the destinations for retirement, albeit slowly:

1) I don't want a lot of rain and snow. You Southerners don't have much of an idea how much rain there is on the western side of the United Kingdom. I could say the British Isles, which includes the Irish Republic.

2) I want a retirement country which experiences all four seasons. This rules out the Caribbean, possibly Ecuador. Buenos Aires is on my shortlist.

3) I don't wish to live in a high cost of living country. I'm talking more Norway, the rest of Scandinavia, Monaco, Switzerland, those kind of places. The UK is just about affordable, and no frozen pension. I may go into further details if pressed.

4) I must have a predominantly Christian country, where I can live in peace. The Church is always the first point of contact. I would feel lost in a non-religious country or somewhere where a majority was practising a religion alien to myself. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c79q8p8qx1do

5) I would like to be able to walk the streets in safety. A seaside location would be pleasant. Somewhere like Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Please feel free to add to the list. If I can't decide I'd be happy with a terraced house in Deal or Walmer, or an apartment overlooking the sea. They are my kind of people: thoughtful, not brash. My kind of resort. https://youtu.be/sdi4Y093-9c

Just got back from a weekend in Manchester, went to see Old Trafford before it gets dismantled or upgraded, also I have a brick with my name on so I wanted a photo just in case it gets removed.  Stopped in the city centre, I honestly thought I was in a different Country to the one I’ve grown up in, hardly anyone spoke English.
