Malta or Gozo might be worth a thought. We met a man who had retired there from Manchester. He was paying, per month, there, what he'd been paying, per week, here. It included the use of a roof top terrace, a cleaner, and utilities. If he went to the doctor and needed to see a specialist, the doctor would phone the hospital there and then. The appointment was made. For this service he paid £1 per week to a fund which provided nursing care when he came out of hospital. Their NHS was, at the time, the fourth best in the world. The needs of the elderly are well catered for, with hot meals being delivered. We met this man at 6.30am, walking his dog. He was in his late 70's and thoroughly enjoying life. It's a pleasing extra that the Maltese love the British.

Malta is really pleasant and would be a great place to retire.  There is excellent food and it is very good value. English is widely spoken (obviously also Maltese and Italian) and as you say the British are still very popular there because of WW2, as in Crete.

Got back from Cornwall last weekend, loved it, first time iv'e been to Bude, iv'e always gone further South in Cornwall.  Bude is somwhere i could Retire, the Bude canal was great for cycling and the Beaches and the Beach swimming pool just offers the perfect retirement place.  Off to Ely and Cambridge tomorrow cyling/camping [ love the Cathedral's] then travelling to South London on Sunday and into next week and then who know's, i did think of Suffolk Jane, but maybe next time?   This is Retirement Steve [Brompton and train] I only came back for my knee injections this week or i would have stayed out.

Interesting about Cambridge is the guided bus track linkining St Ive's Huntingdon to Cambridge, it runs for about 16 miles alongside the busy A14 and you can cycle along side on the cycle path, quite funny seeing buses that don't require steering flashing past you, i think it's the longest in the world
