Are you implying that there's a new scandal unfolding across the NHS, for which Letby has been scapegoated, when in fact it is a pattern that could be being repeated elsewhere? Where there any whistleblowers in the Letby situation?
This is not an isolated case. For the last 4 years Michael Bucannon on the BBC has been reporting incidents of poor maternity services across the UK. The Letby case was unusual because of the volume of problems. I was not surprised when this case was first reported. It followed a pattern of those that preceded it. Staff shortages, lack of qualified midwives, poor and inadequate infrastructure, poor adherence to infection and sanitation control. We now know all the issues surrounding these tragic deaths. What is new is that independent neonatal experts have attributed at least one death to a mistake by a surgeon who pointed the finger at Letby.
The Duchess of Chester was dealing with a lot of the most difficult/acute cases and I believe that the organisation and senior members of staff did not want to be branded as those that had been under the spotlight before them. Today they can treat babies that would have died anyway a few years ago but they are risky to treat. The under resourcing of the NHS by the previous government also played apart in the equation.
