Bringing the Holocaust perpetrators to justice

The gas used to be delivered to the crematoriums by an ambulance of the Red Cross. It used to arrive about five minutes after a transport of prisoners had arrived for extermination at the crematorium. In the two large gas chambers it was usual to put in each one 1000 people, and the two small ones 500 people each.

With the opening of the doors, the bodies, tightly jammed inside, would fall out. Often it was almost impossible to separate one from another, and one had the impression that they had fought terribly against death. Anyone who had seen a gas chamber filled to a height of four feet with corpses would never forget it, before they were dragged by their wrists to the barbers and dentists to shear off the hair and go over the teeth.

The highest ranking SS member to be tried. I think he was head of the SD. He fled into the Austrian Alps with a handful of others but they were pursued and captured. I think an ex girlfriend then called out to him and his identity was revealed. You can see Kaltenbrunner watching the trials of the July 20th alleged plotters. He cut a very different figure when sitting in the dock at Nuremberg. In fact I believe Kaltenbrunner was given the job of hunting down the plotters. He had originally been a lawyer in Austria but become involved with Nazi supporters. Like many Nazis he had fencing scars. I think he knew both Adolf Eichman and the notorious commando leader Otto Skorzeni. I think they were all Austrian Nazis. When he fled into the mountains he threw his seal of office into a lake and it was discovered years later.

Skorzeni was acquitted at the Dachau Military Tribunal in 1947. Not sure why he wasn't tried at Nuremberg.
