The mystery is why she committed the murders in the first place. She had a boyfriend at the time and I assume could have conceived, so that rules out jealousy of other couples' children. As a teenager she had volunteered as a babysitter to earn extra money, so that seems to rule out children being a nuisance. The Munchausen syndrome was created by paediatrician Roy Meadow. Munchausen syndrome by proxy seems to be an extension of this in that the perpetrator harms others. But the motive remains unclear.
