On Sunday morning, nobody knew that trouble was brewing. Sheila had been ill for years, so I suppose they were all used to it.

I'm guessing that RJ meant that June had never confided re Sheila's ongoing health problems.
Thanks Jane, nothing like confiding with the vicar is there?  Lots of church goers do this.

As a parent, concern for a chronically unwell child is ongoing. That Sunday would have been much like any other.

Yes, so there was no reason for Nevill to mention anything to the churchwarden.

No. Whatever was 'normal' for them was in place. Sheila hadn't JUST come out of hospital so they may have thought things were as good as they could be, especially as she was bringing the grandchildren to stay. Strange though, for a grandmother not to share that pleasure. I do find it sad that June was never able to share any of her concerns with her Vicar. There must have been times when the burden felt unbearable.

Ann didn't know Sheila and the twins were coming to stay either. Perhaps she and June didn't speak as often as has been implied.

June didn't allow Sheila and Collin to marry in the church where she worked. Why ?

It may be that June kept all things regarding Sheila close to her chest. It's natural, when a family member is mentioned, for people to ask questions. I get the feeling that June didn't want to talk about her. According to her friends who'd known her since all their children were young, whilst the other mothers talked about their children, June said little or nothing about hers. Maybe it was simply that she didn't want to sound as if she was boasting?

Ann, as a child, had obviously been close to June and Nevill. As an adult, perhaps life circumstances got in the way. I don't think, as an adult, she was as close as she believed herself to be. On the whole, I don't think, as a family, they were particularly close.

Lookout, when Sheila and Colin married, Sheila's pregnancy was obvious. It may not matter now, but in the late 70's it might have been frowned on. Less so, perhaps, than June imagined. It was probably her own embarrassment at work.

More like shame, which is probably why she never spoke about Sheila to the vicar or anyone else when her illness became evident as well.
