Well I know it is now, but then did it have the same effect?

I would have thought that a 999 call would have the same result - some officers would be sent out from the nearest police station.

Why would they have a 999 system if the calls were just handled as normal?

It's the 'immediacy' which is different.

If he didn't want an "immediate" response, he wouldn't have complained about the time it was taking, and he wouldn't have said that his father sounded terrified.

So he would have called 999!

True Caroline, I think ringing the police direct was a more personal report, it’s always been 999 for any emergency. Surely there has to be a difference in the way it’s treat?

To the best of my memory, back then they used different cars for different purposes. There were those which trundled round country lanes -I believe they were the Ford Anglia's with the funny back windows- used for everyday police work, then there were the biiiggggg powerful response cars, Zephyrs?, which were sent out on emergencies.

It was necessary to make it sound right or it might have come back on him later.

Nah. If he wanted to delay the police, he would have said that it was probably much ado about nothing.

EP's work ethic didn't sound so hot did it ? If the nearest sub-station was closed and calls transferred to the furthest manned station, then emergency calls which by area of the unmanned station, no longer became emergencies as it was as broad as it was long in sending cars out whatever number was used unless there happened to have been an incident close to where the .call came from

It depended on what station personnel were sent to as to which cars they got to drive. They had better looking hats for the response vehicles. Less plod-like :)) :)) :))
