How "clever" was / is JB

Some suggest these murders were the work of a clever, cold and calculated killer. If it was JB then these murders were far from perfect and "errors" ultimately got him convicted.

(killing 5 people in one act and leaving no solid evidence takes some doing or a lot of luck)

The most bizarre act JB was supposed to have done was allegedly placing the silencer (with blood and paint on it) back in the gun cupboard, instead of leaving it next to SC's body or taking it away with him 

Bashing his father around in the kitchen (if that's what happened) and hoping to pin it on SC was also a big gamble 

I'm not too sure how relevant this is, but how clever is JB.

JB had very privileged schooling, but what qualifications did he get?

Would it not come down to common sense as opposed to cleverness/intelligence?
He is the first to admit that he was no scholar,failing quite miserably at school.I believe he passed two exams.One was geography and the other (not to sure)may have been maths?
He did not participate in sport much,as he was found to have a cracked (I think)skull,which he claims was a result of his mother dropping him as a baby.His reading and writing skills were none too brilliant,but am sure he has improved on this over the years with all that casework he is working on!

Given his Uncle Bobby fair warning that he would have no qualms in topping his mum & dad.  This tip off appears to have been omitted from his own memory when calculating his schemes.  So he may also suffer from amnesia as well as being thick.

Forewarned his girlfriend that the family were going to get iced... and that the only outstanding issue with regards to commencing this act was in finalising the method of death.  For this task, he also revealed he had steeled himself for the task by strangling rats (just to appeal to the jury at his near certain trial).

Confirmed vaguely to his girlfriend (once a trainee primary school teacher) that the plan had been commenced and was ticking over nicely (even though this involved the diabolical murder of two sleeping children).

Expected / assumed his girlfriend would say nothing about the matter.

Thanks Roch, a good reply, backing my original points above and suggesting that he would have had to be very stupid to have planned the perfect murders, only to drop in all the incriminating points you refer to. It's hard to believe anyone could be that stupid when you life (in prison) is at stake!

It never gets any more credible each time i look at it.  I wonder whether these killings and the subsequent suspicion towards Jeremy Bamber, were simply the culmination of pure chance.  Like a chain of happenings.  A one in a million combination of events, outside of the control of human beings.  Approached on that level, it does seem to make more sense.  But when attempting to rationalize the case and make it fit in to some quantifiable order, it just makes no sense whatsovever.

Much has been made of Sheila not showing evidence of having committed the murders.However,when I really think about it,there certainly IS evidence there.NGB has told us that an semi-atomatic weapon is very easy to use.The lack of gun residue/oil on her skin/nightdress I believe could simply have come down to the fact that she had showered and changed.There was evidence the shower had been used,Sheila appeared to look freshly washed,especially her hair that had seemed to dry without her brushing or styling it,and there were not one,BUT THREE buckets of clothes soaking in the kitchen.Were all these items of clothing being soaked because they were bloodstained?And as Cliff mentioned,why did Jones take away two pairs of shoes from Sheilas bedroom,and what happened to them?Jones had a particular interest in Sheilas clothes too!Why would this be if he indeed suspected Jeremy?
