Enjoyed the video Steve.
I'd say that Joan strived as a mother but as with a lot of the stars they struggle with career and motherhood and tend to take their " homework " into their family lives so it's only natural that something has to give. I don't think she was the monster that people made her out to be but she badly needed help and unfortunately took out her anger in her eldest daughter. The children hadn't seemed to have suffered too much as opposed to what we read on a daily basis classed as abuse and cruelty so she wasn't in that category. Although in this PC world it would have looked that way and she'd have been quickly left without her children.
I imagine that the children learned a lot of good things probably more so than bad along the way as their mother did her best in instilling manners, education and character and generally moulding them in preparation for their futures. They hadn't appeared to have been that badly done to even though she'd made it apparent that her two " favourites " had been the twins.

Yes I noticed she favoured the twins, possibly because they had each other as support and were able to give her unconditional love. Still surprising that they only got a fraction of the estate, though.

Possibly because the estate was so much back then would have been the reason why the mother left so much to charity rather than dividing it to her siblings of who had found their own ways in life financially including the twins who, as she'd got older, felt that she'd had more comfort from them but at the same time still gaining in life more than others ( outsiders ) as Joan had looked after them all to the best of her ability without,it seemed, a male father figure. I've read about worse in this day and age, though she would have appeared a " monster " to many.

As I'd already said Joan clearly had a problem and that problem stemmed from her own childhood and was made worse when she turned to alcohol as the " crutch " that she obviously needed to keep her focussed. Sadly the alcohol exacerbated the situation and made her violent as it does with a lot of people.
For her to have played the roles in some of her films that she had done would take a certain amount of " mental imbalance " to start with as no normal person would easily have fitted into some of her roles.
Bette Davis was another example. Whether it was the roles they'd played which made them as they were or whether there'd been a " mental streak " beforehand is debateable.
I'm not altogether a believer in books " after the fact " so would be less inclined to hear something which was one-sided.
Joan Crawford wasn't unique as there have been many stars whose lives became such public property after their deaths------either in books or the media usually penned by the siblings.
