Two Investigations, HQ SOCO versus Witham SOCO, one version out, one in...

Witham Officers, and Witham SOCO made the relatives feel like the cops had shown little if no interest at all in the possibility that Sheila could not be responsible for shooting the other four victims dead, and then killing herself!

But what the relatives didn't know (until much later on), was that the Witham Officers, and the Witham SOCO's were dealt a hand to play up to, by HQ Officers, and HQ SOCO. What started off at the scene with non Witham based officers containing the farmhouse and those inside it, and eventually they entering the premises in a futile attempt to bring the so called on going seige to an end, what transpired there afterwards, only served to tear the varying divisions amongst Essex police, turning one officer, against another, and during the entire span of both parts of this investigation, officers from one camp, as opposed to the other, were at loggerheads with one another, however some officers from the less influential party, swapped sides and became embroiled in the eventual turn of the investigation which HQ Officers, and their HQ SOCO counterparts, manipulated, first one way at the scene on the first morning of the police investigation, and a month afterwards when HQ took full control of the investigation, and introduced the use of the second silencer!

The Witham officers pursued their investigation on the footing that what they had been dealing with, was 'a case of four murders, and a suicide', and at the heart of their investigation was a number of weapons, including rifles, shotguns, and a Parker Hale silencer...

They had been dealt this hand, by HQ Officers, and HQ SOCO who dealt with the events at and and inside the farmhouse, prior to the Witham Officers, and in Particular , the Witham SOCO being invited to take over control of the overall crime scene at a very late stage in the proceedings (after 10.00am)...

The HQ SOCO silencer, being the key piece of evidence which got introduced in September 1985, and which coincided with the visit by Robert Boutflour to see ACC Peter Simpson, the subsequent appointment of DCS Ainsley to head the fresh investigation ( five murders) and the coming forward on the very same day of Julie Mugford...

The relatives became the necessary mechanism by which to introduce the second Parker Hale silencer into the equation...

It could be argued, that wherever the truth lay in the circumstances of this awful shooting tragedy, that it's outcome could yet still be decided by a reliance upon 'a tale of two Parker hale silencers' - one silencer at the heart of the Witham handling of the investigation, and the other silencer part and parcel of HQ's handling of the same shootings, commencing a month later!

Two Parker Hale silencers then, let's call them (a) the DCI Jones Silencer, and (b) the DCS Ainsley Silencer..

I see this case as follows, it Started off being handled by HQ Officers, and HQ SOCO, who handed over control of the Crime Scene mid morning to Witham Officers and Witham SOCO..

The relatives inundated the Witham officers and SOCO pressurising them to look into the possible involvement of Jeremy as the killer, until after a month of getting nowhere, the relatives took the fight to ACC Peter Simpson at HQ..

At this point, it became a matter of

But for his untimely death, DCI Jones would have been able to provide a valuable insight into the circumstances surrounding the seizure of the silencer by DS Jones from the scene on the first morning of the police investigation (7th August 1985) and the manner with which it had been kept on his office desk at Witham police station, how long it had been kept there, and what if anything or everything that had happened to 'it'..

Bear in mind, DCI Jones' attitude to the relatives who were trying to tell him how to do his job!

Apparently during the course of that first month of the investigation in which DCI Jones was head of the case, he had to have the relatives escorted out of the police station on a couple of separate occasions because he was fed up of their interference in police business!

When the change in the investigation arrived, in September 1985, so to did the introduction of the second key silencer although initially it was a problematic piece of evidence. For example, how was it going to be introduced into the evidence without raising any sort of a suspicion?

Well, for a start the first thing they did was to second key officers who had been part of the original Witham police investigation (SC/688/85) to help them to integrate the second silencer into the new investigation (SC/786/85) as though it had always been part of the Witham investigation, when the second silencer had not been..

For those of you not yet in the know, the Witham SOCO handling of their part of the investigation into this shooting tragedy was part of their unique Scenes of Crime reference number of SC/688/85) , whilst HQ SOCO' handling of their investigation was filed under SC/786/85)..

Not all the involvement of HQ Officers / HQ SOCO's in the investigation was filed in SC/786/85), because that indexed case  reference file did not come into play until September 1985. A separate file was created that dealt with the initial involvement of HQ Officers, and HQ SOCO inside the farmhouse throughout the period of approximately 7.30am, until around 10.00am on the first morning of the police investigation into these tragedies..

A separate file was created that dealt with the initial involvement of HQ Officers, and HQ SOCO inside the farmhouse throughout the period of approximately 7.30am, until around 10.00am on the first morning of the police investigation into these tragedies..

Documentary Evidence Exists to show that there were other Crime references associated with the five deaths at whf on 7th August 1985, kept at Southend on Sea police station (Special Branch) which were in addition to SC/688/85 (Witham SOCO), or SC/786/85 (HQ SOCO), and to date, the contents of these additional files have so far not yet been disclosed..
