Susan Smith, child killer
« on: June 23, 2018, 03:52:PM »
In a possible precursor to the Darlie Routier case, on the night of October 27, 1994 Susan Smith released the handbrake on her maroon Mazda Protégé and let it roll into the John D. Long Lake outside Union, South Carolina. Still strapped into their car seats as the vehicle bubbled beneath the water were her two sons, 3-year-old Michael and fourteen-month-old Alex.

"They were screaming and hollering for their father while the woman who put them in that position was running up the hill with her hands over her ears," State Prosecutor Tom Pope would claim. As the trial played out one question remained: would she get the death penalty or could the Defence delve into her past to sway jurors enough to evince any modicum of pity for the woman who sat before them?
