The murder of Rachel Nickell 25 years on
« on: May 15, 2017, 06:11:PM »
A beautiful blonde is stabbed repeatedly in a frenzied attack on Wimbledon Common, her two-year-old son looking on. It could only have been the work of a mentally deranged individual, yet the Police fixed on the wrong suspect from the start, attempted to frame him through an ill-conceived honeytrap, and only issued an apology fifteen years later, during which time the real murderer of Rachel Nickell had struck again.

Wasn't Colin Stagg about 200 yards away in the park, walking his dog when Napper killed Rachel Nickell ?

The police made a lot of mistakes in this case. And they still make mistakes. The Stephen Port case being a recent one, where 17 policemen face discliplinary action. Rightly so.

It's unclear exactly where he was at the time.  Why they couldn't match Napper's modus operandi with his other victims is a mystery, along with the flecks of paint on the son which were eventually matched to his toolbox, though years too late.

Napper was caught after killing Jacquline Bissett. Some policemen did suggest he could have killed Nickell, but were overruled.

Paul Britton was a Cracker esq criminal psychologist on the case. Which was the popular new way of working in the mid 90's for the police

I assume the police still use these experts, but don't publicise them as much. DNA may mean they are not needed so much now.

A member of the public did suggest Napper to the police after a photofit was published.

Napper was asked to go to the police to give a blood sample. But did not turn up. Two policemen then visited Napper to get this.

But the policemen didn't bother getting a blood sample as Napper was polite & made them a cup of tea. Napper also looked taller than descriptions although he walked with a hunch.

Getting a blood sample would have stopped perhaps dozens of further crimes, including Jacqueline Bissett.

The policemen should have been dismissed.

There are quite a few books about the case. Both before & after Napper was a suspect.

Both pre & post Napper books would be interesting. Although I wouldn't read Paul Britton's book as it would be biased to justify his actions.

It at least stopped charlatans like Paul Britton being seen as credible by the Justice System if nothing else Steve.
