The Glasgow Herald newspaper cuttings.
« on: September 08, 2015, 10:32:PM »
I don't know if this is worthy of a thread in its own right, but it's more of a trip down memory lane really and might stir debate as to the Press coverage on the case. I start with "Tangled web of spurned love, wealth and madness" which you can read here: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19861029&id=HoJDAAAAIBAJ&sjid=q6UMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1812,7290130&hl=en

Bamber denies saying he could kill his parents: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19861017&id=FYJDAAAAIBAJ&sjid=q6UMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1935,4052754&hl=en

Ex-girlfriend told poisonous lies: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19861023&id=GYJDAAAAIBAJ&sjid=q6UMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2288,5663468&hl=en

Police blunders in Bamber case: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19861029&id=HoJDAAAAIBAJ&sjid=q6UMAAAAIBAJ&pg=3624,7254672&hl=en

I'm not sure there's anything new,but it's an interesting read on what is inescapably a shocking case. The only good thing about the clips is they do move up and down courtesy of the white hand so you don't miss any of the printed words.

Some things that stand out:

1) the claim Taff Jones ran off from the scene to play golf was false

2) When Julie came clean police didn't believe her initially they took her more serious after her mother told police what she knew

3) Jeremy acted like a smartass on the witness stand much like he did during his interrogation with police.  At one point the prosecutor said to him he was lying and killed his family and instead of responding that he was innocent and didn't do it he responded, "that's what you have got to try and establish"

4) The defense closing that he was living independently with his own car and cottage etc wasn't such a strong argument to make given they were only given to him in exchange for working at WHF and thus these very things established how he wasn't independent but rather dependent.

5) While in prison Jeremy made up new claims to use on the witness stand he had not told the police.  For instance he made up the claim Sheila told him she wanted to go to heaven and to take people with her.

6) He testified he drove slowly to WHF because he wanted police to get there first because he was frightened.  This is pretty week given he saw them pass him and could have at that point sped up instead of arriving a few minutes later.

Jeremy to Julie on his parents: He confided to his girlfriend Julie Mugford that their treatment of him had "forfeited their right to live".

Jeremy on Sheila: Sheila demanded exorcism, and said if she could not be exorcised she should die..

Colin on Sheila: "She was a naive and frightened child. She had been through a difficult and confusing time. The world frightened her. She had tried to cover this up and only those closest to her knew how lonely and vulnerable she was."

Thanks.

At least we know why he arrived after the police. He was frightened.

Why would he have got half of Mabel Speakman's will ? There was Neville, June, Sheila, the twins and any other relations she wanted to leave money with.

Interesting that the judge when passing sentence said he 'had no doubt' Bamber was guilty.

Also interesting that it says MM warned Julie about Bamber.

It says the police didn't believe Julie for the first hour after she approached them.

Sheila was a frightened woman, scared of the world-------so much so that she got a flight to Japan ? No sick person that I knew/know could possibly think about getting a flight that distance away,or even short-haul for that matter. She couldn't have gone any further. :o
Granted,Sheila broke her stay by writing to Colin that she was desperate to return and for him to make arrangements for her to see the psychiatrist on her return. I wonder why ?

Lookout, I wonder if it's ever occurred to you just HOW she thought Colin was going to make an appointment for her with a psychiatrist. They tend not to be listed in Yellow Pages and it's generally thought that a referral via a GP is the correct procedure.
