Nicholas and Daniel usually went upstairs about half-past seven at the farm for a bath after dinner. That evening they put on matching cotton paisley pyjamas, Daniel in red and Nicholas in blue, before climbing into their candlewick-covered beds in the narrow room next to the bathroom. The surface of the cupboard that stood between their beds was cluttered with toys, drawings and the two Mr. Men mugs half-filled with orange juice. Laid out at the foot of each bed were clothes for the morning they would not live to see.
