Murderer's appeal bid after cops phone log is found 33 years on

By Matthew Young

Mass murderer Jeremy Bamber has launched a new bid for freedom. Bamber, 58, has found a phone log he says proves he did not shoot parents Nevill and June, sister Sheila "Bambi" Caffell, and her six-year-old twin sons Daniel and Nicholas in August 1985. Bamber is serving a full life tariff for the massacre at White House Farm in Essex.

Bambi Killer: Shock New Evidence Revealed

Bamber claims police record proves he is innocent of the White House Farm massacre

Murderer Jeremy Bamber claims he has unearthed phone call evidence that could set him free, 33 years after he was jailed for slaughtering his family. His legal team say a police record referring to a call made by Jeremy Bamber on the night of the White House Farm massacre in 1985 proves he was not there at the time and could form the basis of an appeal.

Bamber's lawyer Mark Newby said: "The evidence strongly suggests the chain of events could not have been what the Prosecution alleged." The phone call evidence forms one element of a huge bundle Bamber's team will soon submit to the Criminal Case Review Commission.

Document will not deliver get out of jail card

Analysis by Peter Kirkham Ex-Murder Cop

This is one of those cases that simply won't go away. The precise timing and nature of telephone calls in this case have long been of great importance and now we have a new document which raises more questions about them.

If the calls are correct as recorded, Jeremy Bamber could not have committed the murders.

The second phone call was considered by the Criminal Cases Review Commission in 2010. They concluded that it was mistakenly recorded. Now the new document seems to confirm that it did occur.

In 1985 things were VERY different from today. There was no caller ID and no routine electronic timing and recording of calls received by the police.

Officers noted down what they were told by the caller on paper. Timings were done by looking at the clock, which left a lot of room for error. Even if there were two calls, made at the times recorded, there is no hard and fast evidence that the circumstances were as recorded.

I don't think the appearance of the new document makes a huge difference to what is already known.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission will review this new evidence but I don't think it is going to lead to Jeremy Bamber's conviction being declared unsafe.

The previously unseen police document appears to back up Bamber's story that two calls were made to police on the night of the murders, one from his father and one from him after Nevill rang saying Sheila had "gone crazy".

At his trial, the prosecution said only one call was made to police-from Jeremy Bamber at 3:26am from the crime scene, White House Farm in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex.

But the new document describes a call to police from Jeremy Bamber timed at "appox 3:37am"

His legal team argue it shows Bamber could not have made the 3:26am call from the farm and returned to his home 3.5 miles away in Goldhanger to make the second call.

But no call to the emergency services was recorded. If Nevill made no such call, it can hardly have been put through to the police and we're back to trying to prove a negative.

The 3:37am note came from an interview with a PC Myall, of Essex Police, during the Dickenson Enquiry into the force's handling of the case after Bamber's conviction in November 1986.

The note was found by Bamber among thousands of police documents released to him in 2011.

PC Myall is noted as telling Dickinson: "We received a telephone call at the PStn (Police Station, Witham). The officer (PC West) at CD Control (Chelmsford) was on the phone and told us that he was relating information to us and still had the informant (Jeremy Bamber) on the other telephone."

Haven't a clue, Steve. It's not a paper I buy and I haven't seen any headlines because I haven't been out. Have just tuned into the News Channel but it's more concerned with Brexit than with Bamber.

It is all common sense.

Bamber did call the sixth furthest away police station - Chelmsford. Which was over 21 miles away. He did this because it gave him the best chance of being picked up & gave him more time to get changed.

Nevill would never call Chelmsford police station. Or 999. The whole process would take too long. Sheila was going crazy with a rifle for shooting rabbits.
